Salvadorans want open debate on the decriminalization of abortion
Women’s organizations in El Salvador say that the issues of women are being ignored in the country. It seems that the powers that be do not understand that women “have duties and rights in a democratic society.”
One polemic issue is the decriminalisation of abortion, which remains a taboo subject in the majority Catholic population.
“Decriminalisation of abortion is an issue not being discussed by anyone,” points out Rosa Gutierrez, coordinator of one women’s rights group. The Legislature was pressured by the Catholic hierarchy in 1997, to criminalize all forms of abortion, including previously legal reasons for termination, according to the women’s organization. This has resulted an increase in deaths of women due to unsafe abortions.
Gutierrez cited the group’s proposal to Congress three years ago, which advocated for three main items: sex and family planning education, contraceptives for women and freedom of conscience for women.
The applicants hope that Congress will deal with the issue objectively, instead of from a moralistic standpoint.
